Today I have a lovely guest blog post from Zara Hampshire on healthy Chinese takeaway dishes, especially for all you expectant mums out there. I know exactly what it’s like to just feel completely knackered at the end of the day after going to work, or even just a day of running errands, the last thing you want to do is cook, so I often reached for the takeaway menu too. But enough about me, over to Zara who is going to let you know which Chinese takeaway dishes are the healthiest to have when your pregnant.
Being pregnant is tough stuff! Between queasy mornings, stressful days at work, and the unrelenting cruelty of stairs (oh my god—STAIRS!), it’s hard to think about doing anything else—that is until you get home and realise there’s still housework to do, a dog to walk, an ever growing shopping list on the fridge, and mouths to feed. Normally, after a long day you’d just get a Chinese takeaway and relax with the family, but now you’re pregnant. “No!” they say, “You must slave away in the kitchen if you want the best for your baby!” But it just isn’t true. There are plenty of delicious, nutrient rich Chinese dishes that can be picked up or delivered right to your door. Here are some of the best for you and your precious cargo.
Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Ginger
Bok Choy, a type of Chinese cabbage, is one of the foods with the highest concentration of calcium, which is necessary in larger quantities while pregnant so a mother doesn’t lose bone density as the baby builds its own. As an added bonus, ginger is a natural cure for nausea. Kids not fans of leafy greens? No worries. Pour a bit of this sweet and salty dish over a bowl of white rice and they’ll be asking for more before you know it. Maybe just don’t tell them it’s a vegetable…
This well-known dish is probably one of your favourites already, but did you know that it’s packed with vitamins essential to the health of pregnant mothers and their babies? Almond chicken is a stir-fry made with almonds (duh) and peas, both of which have a high concentration of folic acid. Folic acid is known to prevent neural tube birth defects affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Seaweed is an iodine-rich food, which is crucial for proper thyroid function in a mother. A lack of iodine can cause severe birth defects and even miscarriage. A seaweed salad or Chinese crispy seaweed work as great starters for a family meal, because not only are they tasty, but they’re fun to eat, too!
Chinese Beef with Broccoli
Red meat has a bad reputation nowadays, but don’t forget to eat some during your pregnancy to insure healthy levels of iron in your, and your baby’s, blood. This popular dish also contains an ingredient packed with folic acid—broccoli.
This dish is the mother load of healthy vitamins for mothers carrying loads themselves. It features two varieties of mushrooms (high in niacin), peas (folic acid), and tofu (soy), which is one of the healthiest foods for women, pregnant or not. It also contains a ton of other vegetables that are just plain healthy no matter what.
Great news! You’re pregnant! While it is time to clear out the back office or the man cave (finally) to make room for a little one, there’s no need to empty the takeaway menu drawer in the kitchen! There are plenty of delicious, vitamin rich takeaways that you can eat throughout your pregnancy, so next time you feel like those stairs are getting you down (OH GOD—STAIRS!), head to Hungry House and choose a takeaway or delivery that will satisfy you and your little one while making life a bit easier at the same time.
