Hi it’s Jon here! Chantele has handed over the blog…just for today, so I can tell you all about the Helly Hansen Hiking Boots and Jumper I have been sent to review.
Since I’ve started to take more of an interest in Landscape photography as a hobby I have realised the need to upgrade some of my more more basic wet weather and outdoors gear. Our trip to Iceland proved to us just how important it is to have quality gear, suited to the terrain and weather you are likely to encounter. Having quality walking shoes or boots can make a huge difference not just in comfort but also in regards to your safety.
Traverse Hellytech Waterproof Hiking Boots
Walking boots are often boring looking, mostly a wash of brown, beige or black boots in every store you go into. There’s a good reason for this, walking mountains and river banks gets your feet dirty, and black/brown boots are a brilliant at looking clean after a wipe down. So when I saw the orange walking books from Helly Hansen, I was instantly drawn to them. Walking boots shouldn’t be boring, and lets face it, you’re never going to lose track of me in these babies.
My current trusty walking boots are a lightweight trainer style boot, great for lighter walks and relatively ordinary terrain, but these Helly Hansen boots are on another level of construction. The first thing I noticed is how much more ankle support they give. When laced up, they give a much more reassuring level of support, perfect for the more uneven ground on mountainsides and welsh countryside. On a recent walk up Pen Y Fan, it pained me to see many walkers in lightweight trainers on what can be treacherous ground, followed by the online posts from Brecon Mountain rescue of walkers having injuries, many, injured ankles. So, first off, a massive tick in terms of support. The soles on these boots are super grippy, with larger lugs than my current boots, perfect for traction and stability on loose soft ground after rain, which it does a lot of in Wales. Not only is the rubber sole super grippy, but the base of the shoe has a great deal of arch strength while still maintaining a lot of flexibility using HH arch brace.
Moving on to the uppers which are made from more than 60% recycled material, theres a whole host of Helly tech to keep your feet warm and dry using a combination collar reinforcement, HH Seam Shield and antimicrobial treatment. The laces on first impression feel like they’re a bit thin, but they do a fine job of locking your feet into the boots, and I particularly love the sturdy metal lace guides with the lower down heel locker for a perfect, supporting fit.
F2F Organic Cotton Sweatshirt
I feel like im getting to the age where I need to put down the hoodies and find a well fitting sweatshirt, and the Helly Hansen F2F Organic Cotton Sweater is just perfect. I often find that round neck sweaters dont fit my proportions very well, but the fit on this one is spot on. No baggy shoulders and arms that are long enough even when I stretch my arms out.
Right out the packaging it feels super soft and ready to wear. Being made from 80% organic cotton and only 20% polyester, its a nice touch too for the more eco friendly amongst us. Its seen a lot of wear in the last few weeks and Im happy to report its come out of the wash looking as good as it did when it was new.
