How to Make Your Kid’s Screen Time Count

June 9, 2024 Chantele Leave a comment

Screen time is kind of, if we’re honest, every parent’s frenemy. It’s the digital babysitter we all rely on from time to time but feel slightly guilty about. However, before you cloak yourself in shame every time you hand over the tablet, let’s pivot. What if I told you that screen time could be more than just a way to keep the peace while you sneak in a shower or make dinner? Yes, those precious minutes can actually be educational and not just a mind-numbing parade of cartoons. Here’s how to turn screen time into something that’s both productive and fun.

Choose Games That Teach

Not all games are created equal. For every finger-swiping fruit massacre game out there, there’s a puzzle-solving, brain-busting alternative that can teach your kids something worthwhile. Look for games designed to educate as well as entertain. From math and science to language arts, there are apps and games that can sharpen your child’s skills while they think they’re just having fun. Heck, even the classic that is spider solitaire can teach kids to think more logically! So, it’s kinda the ultimate parenting hack: your kids enjoy their screen time, and they’re learning something at the same time. Win-win!

Interactive Storybooks

Swap out some of that video watching for interactive storybooks. These gems promote reading skills and often include features that allow children to engage with the story. They can tap on words to hear them pronounced, play mini-games related to the narrative, or even create their own story endings. It’s like having a tiny, interactive library at their fingertips.

Educational Videos That Don’t Feel Educational

Thanks to platforms like YouTube, there are zillions of videos out there, but not all are mindless. Channels like CrashCourse, SciShow Kids, or National Geographic Kids offer content that’s as entertaining as it is educational. They cover everything from the water cycle to the wonders of the animal kingdom in a way that’s captivating. It’s like sneaking vegetables into a smoothie – they won’t even notice they’re learning!

Appy Learning

Yes, there’s an app for that. Educational apps can transform screen time from passive watching to active learning. Apps like Khan Academy Kids, Duolingo, or even code-learning platforms like ScratchJr can introduce your kids to new languages, coding, or even the arts. These apps use games and challenges to teach concepts in a way that’s fun and engaging.

Set Goals and Reward Progress

Make screen time interactive and goal-oriented. Set challenges or learning objectives for your kids to achieve during their screen time. Maybe they have to complete a certain level in a math game or finish a lesson on a reading app. Reward their progress with something fun, like choosing the next family movie night flick or an extra 10 minutes of bedtime story reading. This not only makes screen time more productive but also teaches goal setting.

Screen Time Together

Turn screen time into family time by joining in on the fun. Play educational games together or watch interesting documentaries. Discussing what you’ve watched or learned can reinforce new knowledge and also makes for great bonding. It shows your kids that you value their interests and their learning.

As you can see, you really can make your kid’s screen time count for something more than just keeping them occupied. So, as long as you keep it brief, you can say goodbye to screen time guilt!
