Family Travel Mistakes to Avoid Before Your Next Trip

July 24, 2026 Chantele Leave a comment

A family holiday can be an enormously stressful experience when things don’t go well. Often, the problems can be outside of our control. Sometimes, however, they’re the result of our own actions, or lack of action.

So, what do the common mistakes look like, and how might we avoid them?

Choosing a Holiday That Doesn’t Suit Everyone

Not every member of your family will share the same vision when it comes to what quality leisure time looks like. If you want everyone to be happy, then you’ll need to account for everyone’s preferences. This often means maintaining an open dialogue with younger members of the group. If you simply book the kind of holiday that you enjoy as adults, then you might find that your children are vocally displeased, which isn’t much fun for anyone.

Before you book, have a chat about what you’re looking for. The ideal resort might include a good balance of relaxation, activities, and family-friendly convenience. All-inclusive holidays often tick all of the required boxes, which is what makes them such a popular choice among young families who want to maximise convenience.

Underestimating the Importance of Budget Planning

If you aren’t on top of your finances, then you might find that the cost of your holiday quickly runs away from you. Establish a clear budget, and make sure that every element of your holiday is covered. That means thinking not just about the cost of your flight and your accommodation, but of the transfers you’ll need to link them together.

Ideally, your travel budget will give you room to breathe. Set aside extra money for discretionary spending, and for comfort in case of an emergency. An extra 10% is often a reasonable cushion.

Overpacking and Bringing Unnecessary Items

If you’re only going on a short break, you don’t need to take a lot of luggage. In fact, even long holidays can often be enjoyed with a surprisingly small selection of items. You might feel apprehensive at the idea of leaving something behind, and so decide to err on the side of overpacking. But this can lead to avoidable trouble, in the form of heavy cases, misplaced items, and extra handling fees.

Cut down on luggage by building versatile capsule wardrobes, comprising items that can be easily mixed, matched, and layered. Make sure that you have a checklist, so that you can make sure that you’ve packed everything you need.

Leaving Preparation Until the Last Minute

Preparing for a trip means getting things moving as early as possible. It might be that you run into difficulty because you’ve left things too late. For example, some countries might not allow you entry unless your passport has more than six months to run – and knowing this early will allow you to apply for a new one without rushing. What’s more, if you’re travelling at peak time, you might find that seats on the plane, and positions at the most popular attractions, are difficult to come by when you’re booking at the last minute.
