Crafts // Mothers Day Craft for Toddlers – Handprint Flower Card

February 10, 2020January 28, 2026 Chantele Leave a comment

Us mums (and Nannas) love nothing more than a Handmade Mothers Day Card, especially if it features our little ones. Pinterest is chock a block with craft ideas for mothers day cards for toddlers. I found a whole tonne of different handprint card ideas and eventually decided to make Elian’s handprints into a flower which I could add a photo too and I love how it turned out.

This mothers day card for toddlers idea is super easy to recreate and of course lots of messy fun too! I love how bright and colourful it was and how much fun me and Elian had together making a whole bunch of flowers so he had cards to give all the ladies in his life.

Mothers Day Handprint Flower Card

Although I’ve called this a mother’s day gift card I think this sweet designed would work really well as a handmade birthday card, valentines card, easter card or even a get well soon card. The handprint flower works really well all year round, and if you chose a different colour palette it can suit all sorts of occasions and seasons.

If your kids are little then they are going to need a little help constructing the card, but older kids should be capable of doing most of the design and construction themselves, and you can let them get messy and creative with the rotating handprints and colour scheme.

What you will need:

  • White Paper Plate
  • White Square Cards (Big enough to fit your finished flowers, we used these)
  • Poster Paint – Yellow, Red, Orange and Purple (although any will work) (Like these)
  • Paint brushes (Thick ones like these work well)
  • Photo of your little one (small enough to fit in the palm of their hand)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Felt tip pens
  • Cooperative Little One (Sorry I can’t help with that one, its down to you!! lol!)

Don’t forget to pin this to find it later

How to make a Handprint Flower Mothers Day Card

  • Chose what colours you would like your flower and pour out a little paint of each colour into a pot or plate.
  • Starting with the central colour of the flower (yellow) paint your Childs palm, if they are old enough they could do this themselves.
  • Then continue painting the ‘petal’ colours either across the fingers in stripes or down each individual finger
  • Once the hand is fully painted place you Childs hand over the paper plate with their palm in the centre and press down firmly. Then rotate the plate a little and press down again.
  • Continue rotating and printing your Childs hand until you complete a full circle. (You may need to reapply the paint half way through printing). Then leave to dry
  • Once your handprint flower is dry carefully cut it out. I found it easiest to leave a small white border around each finger print.
  • Stick your flower onto your white card then draw your stem and leaves (littleness can do this if they are confident enough with felt tip pens)
  • Trim your little ones photo into a circle that will fit the centre of your handprint flower, then let them glue it on
  • Leave it all to dry and you have a very sweet Handprint Flower Mothers Day Card, or a birthday card for grandma maybe!
