I love the idea of little clusters of pretty stuff dotted around my home, or the technical term vignettes. When we moved into our house I knew I wanted to make it more personal, more us. Living in rented houses for 7 years, then back in my parents house for 18 months before we got our home I never felt like I could really make the space properly my own. But now that we have our own house, and we know we aren’t going to be moving anytime soon I feel like I can properly decorate and accessorise the place to really reflect me and Jon.
The house has still got a huge way to go in terms of decorating as we are just doing a bit at a time, I see no rush to get everything in place straight away, I would rather be selective about what we put in our home and take our time choosing and finding the perfect items. But the vignettes have started to take shape in the dining room on my awesome midcentury modern G-Plan Fresco sideboard.
One side of the sideboard houses a candle, my ceramic deer from Copenhagen, a Wooden star and my lovely new giant silver owl from Oscars Boutique. This side is still a work in progress as I am on the look out for a better candle that will fit with the colours of the other items better, but I love how each of the items compliments the others even though they have no relationship. I also think vignettes look great when items are staggered in height, it draws the eye in because it looks interesting.
My Oscar’s Boutique owl is the newest edition to the house. When looking on Oscar’s Boutique there were so many items that I liked the look of, but I have a thing for owls, and I love completely silver (or white) animals or items, I think they are slightly more timeless and classic. Originally I was going to put him on the new shelves in the living room, but once I popped him next to the deer (there was originally a large glass jar there waiting to be turned into a terrarium) he just worked, so that is his new home…we named him Oscar! The other end of the sideboard is this little vignette. A small stack of fashion and photography books and magazines, my Home Sense lamp, a tiny silver bunny (meant to be a ring holder) an antique clock of Jon’s Uncle and a vintage camera. Obviously being photographers the camera and magazines are totally us! The clock is sentimental to Jon so we wanted to find a place where it fitted in with our decor, and even though it doesn’t work it has become a part of the house. I simply love bunnies and the lamp is of course practical and the colour goes with my rug and new cushions!!
So vignettes can have a number of reasons, meanings and purposes. They are a great for adding a personal touch and adding interest to a room, rather than just having a single ornament or something standing alone somewhere. The items can simple be something you love, or it can have meaning to you, the key is not to make the vignette too busy, don’t overcrowd and be selective with what you group together. Play around with the items and layout, the fun is in mixing it up, adding and taking away items when ever you feel like it. It can help you change up your home decor easily and without spending extra money, simply move items from else where in your house, or maybe pull something out of storage or the attic and see if you can make it work.
So with that in mind…Oscar’s Boutique have offered to give one of you lovely readers a very cute Love Definition Plaque. This would be a perfect example of something you can add to a vignette anywhere in your home.
To get your hands on this lovely prize from Oscar’s Boutique you just need to enter below. Giveaway will close 6th July at midnight. Open internationally, winner will be drawn at random. Good Luck!
