Ever had one of those evenings where you really fancy a takeaway, but you know they aren’t particularly healthy for you and they can really impact your finances if you’re trying to keep to a budget…well then you better start looking for a great fakeaway recipe to help get you through the takeaway cravings!
This recipe is super simple to make (especially if you have a pressure cooker, although it can easily be cooked on a hob also) but the end result is a beautiful, slightly sticky and flavourful Chinese fakeaway that will stop you reaching for the takeaway menu (or deliveroo, uber eats, just eat app these days!) Its even better than a real Chinese takeaway as it’s healthier, cheaper and you can whip it up in under 30 minutes. This fakeaway recipe has become a firm favourite in our house already as both the kids love it, and you can easily adapt it to add any veggies you enjoy or have on hand. Serve it over rice or on a jacket potato, with your choice of sides or bread…just as good as a real Chinese Takeaway.

Why use a Pressure Cooker for a Chinese Fakeaway
The pressure cooker I have is the Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker which is a 12-in-1 programmable multi cooker. Apart from multiple different pre-timed pressure cooker settings, there is also a slow cooker setting, steam setting, sauté setting, dessert, yogurt and keep warm setting. So this awesome little device really does earn its space in your kitchen. Ive yet to use the steam, dessert or yogurt setting, but should I ever want to try a recipe which requires that setting then I will be able to.
This has now replaced my slow cooker permanently. I only need the 1 appliance in my kitchen to serve both functions. Which is great as I already have a small kitchen, so less bulky appliances to store. Win/win!
If you are cooking joints of meat or tougher pieces of meat the main benefit is the low cook time (I can cook a whole large chicken in 25mins!) The high pressure allows you to drastically cut the time it takes to cook dishes. If you’re cooking a dish like this though, the cook time would be pretty similar to if you chose to cook it on the hob. But the main benefit for me is the fact I can set it to cook, and leave it for the time it takes. No need to be standing over your hob or having to keep stirring the dish. Once the timer is set you can walk away and get on with something else. This is a pretty big plus point for a parent as it helps save me time and makes everything way easier.
The Perks of a Fakeaway Recipe
So maybe you’re thinking ‘what is a fakeaway?’ Well simply put a fakeaway is a take away style dish that you cook at home. This has the benefit of being both healthier for you and cheaper! There are loads of Slimming World fakeaway recipes available as they use the term quite a lot. But it is also big in the budgeting community where people are trying to save money on their food spends.
I have made a number of Slimming World Fakeaway Recipes over the years, and they are always tasty dishes, often better than actual take away dishes. This recipe isn’t a slimming world friendly one as the honey, ketchup and cornflour would need to be syned.
Budgeting wise, not purchasing takeaways and instead cooking a takeaway style dish at home can save you quite a substantial amount of money. This is especially true if you have them frequently throughout the year. Dishes like Chinese, Indian, Fried Chicken, Pizza, Tex Mex, Thai and other style meals can be super simple to cook yourself at home once you have some of the basic ingredients and spices.
Plus a fakeaway dish is just super tasty! And you dont feel so guilty eating it…you can enjoy it every day of the week if you want!
Honey Soy Chicken Recipe for the Pressure Cooker
This is a super simple recipe but the end result is a beautiful, slightly sticky and flavourful Chinese fakeaway that will stop you reaching for the takeaway menu (or deliveroo, uber eats, just eat app these days!) Its even better than a real Chinese takeaway as it’s healthier, cheaper and you can whip it up in under 30 minutes. This recipe has become a firm favourite in our house already as both the kids love it. And you can easily adapt it to add any veggies you enjoy or have on hand.
Ingredients you will need for this Chinese Fakeaway Recipe
- 4 chicken breasts, diced
- 1 Large Pepper, Diced (your colour choice!)
- 1 small leek, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup dark soy
- 1tsp Lazy Garlic
- A few strands of Lazy Ginger (we aren’t ginger fans so add 3 or4 but you can add more if you like ginger)
- 1/4 cup Ketchup
- 1/4 cup Honey
- 2tbsp Cornflour (mixed with 2tbsp water)
- A splash of oil
How to make our Honey Soy Chicken Fakeaway
- Set your pressure cooker to sauté and add a splash of oil. Once it has started to heat add in your leek, garlic and ginger. Give them a good mix and allow to soften a little before adding your peppers. Allow them to fry for 2-3 minutes, stir frequently to stop them catching.
- Add in your chicken, soy and ketchup. Stir it all well to combine. Then pop on the lid, make sure your valve is closed. Select the manual setting, high pressure and the timer for 5 minutes.
- Once the timer has counted down quick release the pressure (please watch out for the steam!)
- Remove the lid, select the saute setting and add the honey. Stir it well. Then add the cornflour water mix. Make sure to keep stirring as it can thicken quite quickly.
- Once thick and slightly sticky stop the sauce setting.
- Serve your honey soy chicken fakeaway over rice, with your choice of sides
- Enjoy
