If you are a dog owner then having a dog friendly garden space is highly important, so here are a a few things that are key to keeping your dog safe and happy
Dogs adore nothing more than being allowed the freedom to explore outdoor space. Whether in their own garden, local park on simple on a walk around your local area. They love sniffing the grass and area for interesting scents, running through the long grass, exploring different terrains, playing catch with balls and in some cases digging and burying things! Its in their nature to want to be outdoors, and having a dog friendly garden in which they are safe and happy is key to their quality of life.
Lovely Green Grass
Having a good section of grass for your dog to run on, smell and explore is important. Your outside space doesn’t have to be huge, as long as they are able to stretch their legs and have a bit of a play. You will still need to walk your dog daily, but if you are lucky enough to have a large outdoor space your dog they will be able to get a little extra exercise.
If your grass is looking a little less than perfect, or has developed patches or discolouration it might be a good idea to reseed it. Check out The Grass People for a great selection of lawn seeds and wild flower seed that will have your lawn looking green in no time. Your dog will thank you for all the lovely soft grass under his paws.
Check for toxic plant
There are a number of plants that grow naturally in the UK that are toxic to dogs should they ingest them. When dogs feel unwell they may often eat grass and other plants, so it is important to make sure your garden is free of plants that are toxic to dogs. You can see a list of toxic plants here, most are very rare luckily, but it is worth keeping an eye on your plants just in case.
Fence for security
Make sure your garden is safe and secure for your dog. Having a sturdy fence all the way around your garden so there is no way for your dog to escape is important. Your dog could get hurt or lost if it manages to leave your garden without your knowledge. A wooden or wire fence which is tall enough that your dog cannot jump over or get underneath should keep your dog safe, whilst still allowing them the freedom to explore the garden.
Safe Access
Allowing your dog to have safe access to your garden space is very important. You need to make sure your paths or steps are safe for your dog to walk on and they won’t injure their paws, or risk falling and hurting them selves. Safe access will give them the freedom to explore without you having to constantly be watching them.
