Elian has always been a big fan of building blocks and any sort of construction toys. We have many sets of lego and different brick headz characters that he has built over the last 2 years. And now he is almost 6 he is getting very good at independently following instructions and building structures on his own…which is great for me and Jon as it gives us a little quiet time, haha! So you can bet he was super excited when I opened a box from Just 4 Kids which contained 4 of the new Fab Brix WWF animals for him to build.
We decided to make the Koala first (check out our reel too!) as he looked likely to be the easiest, and he just looks so blinking cute. So read below to find out more about the Fab Brix Koala, what we thought of the set and why building bricks are so great for kids development!
Let us know in the comments which one you think we should make next!
We were sent this toy for review but all thought and opinions are my own
Fab Brix WWF Wooden Building Block Animals
There are currently 12 animals in the WWF Fab Brix collection: Lion, Panda, Koala, Shark, Turtle, Polar Bear, Rhino, Giraffe, Gorilla, Penguin, Crocodile and Elephant. We were sent the Lion, Panda, Shark and Koala to test out and they all look brilliant.
All of FabBrix bricks are made fro FSC certified beech wood and are 100% compatible with plastic construction bricks, so they can be used alongside sets you already own to add an extra element to your constructions.
The Fab Brix Koala
The Koala is made up of 39 wooden bricks, 1 exclusive double sided brick, 1 sticker sheet, 1 instruction manual and 1 podium for displaying your little creature creation.
What we thought of the Fab Brix WWF Koala
As I have said earlier, Elian loves building blocks of any kind so he got stuck in straight away. The instructions are well laid out and easy to understand, so we didn’t have any trouble following them and building this cute little guy. And as it isn’t a big character it didn’t take us very long which is great if you have a little one who doesn’t have a long attention span (luckily Elian would spend hours building lego!)
Elian loved being able to add the stickers to his Koala as it gave him a little personality, made him seem more real and very cute. They give you 2 sets of stickers too, so you can add them again when you remake it or if they start to come off.
The only down side is that due to the bricks being made of wood they are very hard and getting some of the pieces to click together for the first time is quite difficult. It is quite stiff to get the little nodes into the bases of the other bricks, I actually had to get Jon to do a few of them. But I have no doubt that once they have been attached ones or twice, and a little space has been made that they will loosen up a little for the next time. It would have been very hard for Elian to build it completely on his own though, at least for the first time.
He does love the little display podium it came with though. He was very proud of his creation and has popped it on the shelf in his room. It is a lovely way to display them in what would be their natural habitat.
How do building blocks help a Childs development
I am always a fan of toys that allow for open ended play and the chance for little ones to learn whilst playing. Luckily lots of kids toys have the ability to allow learning in some form or another. And building bricks are especially great as they have lots and lots of learning possibilities and can last over a wide age range.
So here are a few of the great reasons you should get your little ones a set of wooden building bricks like these Fab Brix ones
-
Promotes Fine Motor Skills
Connecting building bricks of different shapes & sizes helps children practice dexterity. As they apply different amounts of pressure to connect pieces of various shapes & sizes, it exercises their fingers & enables better control.
-
Builds Creativity
Constructing intricate designs with building bricks of different shapes, colours & sizes aids creativity and imagination. There is no limit to what they can create. Especially during free play, there is no right or wrong. It’s endless imagination!
-
Develops Problem Solving
Where kids are required to follow instructions to assemble structures or objects it helps encourage problem solving, concentration & attention to detail.
-
Planning Skills
Structured play with building bricks that involves following instructions is a very fun yet developmental challenge for kids. Even mistakes made teach them to un-build, retrace their steps, plan & analyse to achieve the final vision without the pressure to learn. It’s a very organic process.
-
Persistence
Building bricks are one of those toys that can keep a child engaged for hours and teach them persistence in the process. Play time with building br teaches them to persevere, keep building, take their time & grow into more complex designs as their skills improve with each level.
-
Confidence
As I mentioned earlier, there is no right or wrong in Lego. Free or structured play, it’s a learning based process that results in a creation based on your child’s vision & effort. There is always a sense of achievement at the final result & kids beam with pride at the end. It’s a very positive way to boost self esteem.
