When is Fathers Day, and what is its history?
This annual holiday has a rich history dating back over 100 years, and is celebrated in many countries around the world. In 1908, a church in West Virginia organized the first-ever event dedicated to fathers in the United States. The event, held on July 5th, was a Sunday sermon commemorating the 362 men who lost their lives in the Fairmont Coal Company mines explosions that occurred in December of the previous year. However, it was a singular observance and did not become an established annual holiday at the time.
The modern concept of Father’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century, when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a day to honor fathers. Dodd’s own father was a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children on his own. She wanted to create a day to recognize the efforts of fathers like her own, and in 1910, Washington state officially recognized the first Father’s Day.
Over time, Father’s Day began to gain wider recognition. In 1916, President Wilson acknowledged the holiday by utilizing telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane after pressing a button in Washington, D.C. Then, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged state governments to observe Father’s Day, further solidifying its growing significance.
The holiday gained national recognition in the US during the 1920s and 1930s, and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in many countries, including the US, Canada, and the UK.
