Design ideas for locations with outdoor spaces

Garden Design IdeasNow that summer is well and truly here, chances are you want to spend as much time as possible outdoors.

Whether you have a small balcony, a large garden or even just a veranda, an outdoor space can act as a valuable extension of your interior living spaces.

A beautifully decorated outdoor space is the perfect place for summer entertaining or just relaxing in the evening.

Checking out a shoot location agency and filing through their outdoor spaces can be a great way of giving you a bit of al fresco inspiration, here’s just a few garden design ideas I came across…

Choose statement furniture

Rather than getting the same old plastic garden chairs everyone has, be bold with statement pieces.

Search antique shops, flea markets and car boot sales for unusual items with a vintage feel, or if you’re handy you could try making your own. If you already have outdoor furniture, give it an update with a striking paint job.

Objects like tree stumps or old oil drums can make interesting stools or tables, and are an easy way to create a talking point.

If you have a bit more money to spend, consider investing in a beautiful statement piece like a dining table or bench.

Be innovative with lighting

Lighting is one of the simplest ways to transform an outdoor space, and can turn an unremarkable space into an enchanting one.

Decorative lanterns are a great way to illuminate your table for evening entertaining. They give the same atmospheric glow as candlelight, but won’t blow out. Try hanging them up, or placing them on the table itself.

Fairy lights or festoon lights make for a magical outdoor area. There are plenty of different options available, from sophisticated glass bulbs to strings of glowing flowers.

For something a bit more fun and playful, why not light your outdoor area with tiki torches? Perfect for parties, they’ll add a bit of tropical ambience to any space.

Create a feature wall

If you have a wall to work with, turn it into a focal point by painting it a bright colour, or jazz it up with vibrantly-patterned tiles.

Plant flowers in a contrasting colour in pots or borders next to your wall for an even more dramatic effect.

Get creative with flooring

Floors aren’t just for indoors. Wood, stone, concrete, ceramic and more can all add interest underfoot.

Wooden planks are great for adding rustic charm, especially if they’re worn. Wooden floor tiles are also perfect for outdoor spaces, and are easy to lay. If using wood, make sure it’s weatherproof and durable enough to use outside.

Traditional flagstones are elegant and timeless, whilst concrete cobbles add a bit of contemporary sophistication.

For a really eye-catching finish, create a mosaic effect with colourful mismatched tiles.

You don’t have to break the bank to turn your outdoor space into a tempting summer hangout spot – a few carefully considered touches could be all it takes to completely transform it.

Whether you do it yourself or get some professional help, your perfect al fresco area may be closer than you think – enjoy!
