Advent Calendars
Lets kick off this Ultimate Family Gift Guide with some Advent Calendars for the kids! Elian is Lego obsessed so it felt only right to get him a Lego Advent Calendar this year. There are dozens of different themed Lego ones available from Marvel and Harry Potter to Lego Friends and Star Wars. I’ve played it safe with Lego City this year and I can’t wait for him to see it and start opening it.
For Effie I found it slightly harder to find one I thought she would like that still had interesting and good quality gifts inside. In the end we settled on the Playmobil Princess Magic Advent Calendar as I know she will love the little characters and Playmobil is always good quality. And if Princesses aren’t your thing they also have a few other versions available, a Christmas theme, a farm theme, Bath toys for the littler ones, mermaid themed to name but a few.
Building and Learning Toys
We are massive fans of magnetic tiles and blocks in the house. I can honestly say they are the most played with toys in our house, with both Elian and Effie. Magnetic toys are open ended and can be used in 100’s of different ways, for construction, patterns, race tracks, marble runs, as buildings, jails and space ships for other toys, the options are endless. This Connetix Pastel 120 piece set would be a great starter set or to add to existing tiles.
Toys that are both fun and educational are a big hit for me, and this Newton’s Lab Hydraulic Claw set from Kikkerland is ticking all the boxes. This awesome little set shows you how to build your own robotic claw from cardboard, tubing and syringes, teaching your kids robotics and engineering in a fun and hands on way. The Newtons Lab range also has a catapult, painting pendulum and wind energy kit amongst other things so there is lots of fun science experiments the kids can get involved in.
Have you heard of the Build Your Own range before? An amazing company with dozens of build your own cardboard creations. From the smaller animal and dinosaur mini builds, perfect for stocking fillers, to the impressive plane shooter, pinball machine, telescope and this marble run! Ive seen them in action at Blog On this year and honestly they are amazing, especially if you have a little one or big one who loves to engineer and build structures and moving machines. The bigger builds take a few hours to construct so will keep them entertained and focused for a while. And they are great for STEM education too!
We are already big fans of Magicubes in this house (check out our review of them here) so I was excited to get my hands on their new Math Building and Word Building sets. The original magicubes are well loved here and are played with a lot, for general building, constructing buildings for other toys and all manner of other imaginative play. The new sets come with magnetic number, math symbol or letter tiles so you can attach them to any of the sides to expand the range of play and add an element of fun learning. Made of 100% recycled plastic they are also better for the environment, and built to last for years, so we will be sure to pass them on once our kids have outgrown them.
Expand their building and construction toy choices with this awesome Geomag Glow in Dark set. We have one of their original rainbow coloured sets, (which we have reviewed here) which Elian already loves, so he will be getting this new set for xmas to allow him to make bigger structures. And with the added fun element that it will glow in the dark.
Help your little ones learn their number with the Number Blocks Number Fun toy. Learn how to count, add, subtract and more, with the 8 different play modes. Once your child masters one activity mode, you can move on to the next one at the touch of a button. If they make a mistake, the cube will prompt them to insert the correct answer to carry on the fun. Great way to carry on the fun of the Number Blocks TV show they all love.
Mechanics Challenge Strike from Geomag is an amazing fun engineering toy that the kids will love if they like the original magnetic Geomags. Take their construction, building skills and inventiveness to the next level with this play on a magnetic marble construction. This set includes 185 pieces: magnetic rods, steel spheres, and mechanical elements able to rotate and trigger chain reactions from the magnetic attraction and repulsion mechanism…its literally hours of trial and error fun to construct the perfect magnetic structure.
Books for Kids
Little readers will love the stunning illustrations in this new book from Carole Smith. Have You Seen The New Forest Unicorn is a lovely whimsical tale set in and around the beautiful sights of the New Forest. Meet the New Forest wild ponies Drummer, Merlin, Peewee, Riley, Willow and Juliet while the search for the illusive New Forest Unicorn.
How stunning are these personalised books from Wonderbly! We already have a few from this amazing company, so I was quite excited to add their 2 newest stories to our bookshelf. The illustrations in all of Wonderbly’s books are truly magical, so bright, colourful and whimsical. Plus the stories are always beautiful and heart warming. You can chose your character to look closest to your little ones, then add their name for a truly personalised gift.
This is the latest instalment of the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls book series, this time telling the stories of 100 Inspiring Young Changmakers. It covers the lives of women from every walk of life, from scientists and activists, wildlife photographers and athletes, to Designers and authors. It is truly inspiring and heart warming to see how much young women are doing to change the world for the better.
Factopia The book of incredible facts that are weirdly connected. This fascinating hardback book is filled with incredible and hilarious facts, all of which are verified by Encyclopaedia Britannica. Did you know that a squid has a doughnut-shaped brain? That goats have rectangular pupils…Mars has blue sunsets…or that the average dog can understand 165 words? Hop from topic to topic in delightfully unexpected ways to discover what connects dinosaurs with chickens or breakfast with black holes!
Toys for Play Time Fun
Effie is at the age where she loves role play, and spends hours with her play kitchen making pretend tea and cakes. So I already know this Dantoy Play Ice Cream Cones and Cup Cake Set will be a big hit. Dantoy’s Bioplastic Range is made of at least 90% sugarcane, a sustainable raw material, which is 100% recyclable. An eco-conscious range that has the same quality as their traditional plastic toys. This is going to be hours of fun al year round, and will work so well with her play kitchen.
We have 2 very big Goo Jit Zu fans in this house. So both have asked for a new one for Christmas this year. I’ve managed to pick up 2 of the Dino X-Ray range for Elian, to go with the Stretch and Strike Thrash Mobile he was recently sent. And for Effie I found the new Goozonians range in Tesco, so she has 2 of them. These fun and stretchy characters are weirdly therapeutic to squish and squeeze, and are brilliant for imaginative play.
The other toy that Elian, and a lot of his school friends seem to be into at the moment, is Super Things. The little collectable plastic characters come in blind bags and can be picked up in most super markets. There are multiple series of these little creations to collect and they are all characters based on other objects. For instance a household appliances range, a food range, a hardware range, etc. But the new bigger Superbots have been released this year and I know Elian is itching to get his hands on them to add to his current collection.
Cutetitoes – Which one will you unwrap? Cutetitos are the cute little plush characters wrapped up like a burrito! WIth a number of different series to collect, from Care Bears, Carnivalitos, Uniconitos, Islanditos, Partyitos, Donutitos and many more, these adorable little characters are sure to be a hit with are cuddly toy fan. Keep them cozy in their unique colourful burrito wrap blankets. The Carnival ones are scented too! Elian unwrapped the seahorse that smells just like toasted marshmallows! yum!
Kidoki Toy range from Kikkerland contains lots of brilliant toys and games for little ones. Their Make, Stick & Play – At My House is a build your own little house with cardboard rooms and 100 stickers. Then you get to have fun playing with the 6 characters.
They also have a great range of On The Go Games in a tin, perfect for when you’re travelling or out and about! Great as a little stocking filler too. We got the Matching Game as Effie loves matching games at the moment so I knew this would be a big hit with her. The little colourful animal cards are very eye catching and perfect for little hands.
Their Stack-A-Bug game is a kids version of Jenga. This bright and colourful bug themed stacking game is eye catching and lots of fun to play. Its super simple for little ones to learn and play, and will work on developing their colour recognition, hand eye coordination, fine motor skills and balancing skills.
I swear every child I know loves bubbles. It really doesn’t matter what age you are, bubbles are just a whole load of fun. Thats why the Gazillion Light Show Bubble Wand is going to be a massive hit with any kid. This hand held wand bubble machine pumps out 100s of bubbles a minute and whats more is this one has a glowing light up effect with 10 different light patterns to bring even more fun to your bubble time
Hands up if you had a yoyo when you were younger? And if your part of my generation you’ll remember the amazing light up ones…well they are back! This brilliant Mega Spin Gravity Yoyo will have you performing tricks like a pro. This awesome yo-yo uses a special auto-return technology – simply throw it down and when it reaches the end of its string it will bounce right back to your hand! Look really cool with your smooth yo-yo skills, enhanced by the colour changing LED lights as it spins.
This is already a firm favourite in our house. Both kids love their Bungee Hopper and spend ages seeing how long they can hop for without falling off. Whats great is that it can be used indoors and outdoors, so even when the weather is rubbish the kids can be active and burn off a little steam inside in a safe way. Meant do ages 5 and up, but Effie is already learning to master it after help from her big bro. And ill be honest and say ive had a go too!
Now this is obviously a gift more suited to the spring or summer months, but this Octopus Kite will be great for getting the kids outdoors and having fun as a family. Its always a bit of a challenge to get a kite to fly, but its a whole lot of fun trying. This is a jumbo kite stretching to a magnificent 4m long with streamer tails, which will look truly beautiful in the sky when it is soaring in the wind.
Lets Get Creative Toys
If your littles love to colour then one of the Hey Doodle Reusable Silicon Activity Mats would be a brilliant gift. These silicon colouring sheets are perfect for hours of creative play, and when they are done you just wash them off and start again. The Hey Doodle range comes in a range of sizes from A4 to A3 and with a fold out book style, plus they have a selection of different themes for colouring. Handily packed up with pens included so they are prefect for travelling too. This one is the animal alphabet so Effie can learn her letters at the same time! Win win for me!
Have some fun with your kids with this Make, Decorate & Play Animal Masks set. Pop out the 6 different animal masks, you can chose from a Tiger, Fox, Rabbit, Frog, Bird or Panda. Have fun decorating them and bringing them to life with the stickers and 3D features. Then don your mask and get wild! So much fun to be had and great for kids of all ages.
We are big fans of Kinetic Sand in this house, and both the kids (plus me!) love the Ultimate Sandisfying Set. There is something very satisfying and calming that comes from moulding, cutting and letting the sand run in your hands. This awesome set comes with 3 different coloured sands and 10 different tools for hours of creative and calming play. Plus unlike normal sand it is super easy to contain and clean up, a win for parents!
What could be more fun than making and decorating your own Christmas cards for family and friends. Ok so this wouldn’t be a gift for xmas day, as thats a bit later, but this would be great as a fun activity for kids to do at the start of December. Crystal Art Disney Cards are a fun way to add a bit of creativity to your xmas and a bit of bling to everyones home.
Time to get a little crafty again, this time with Creart Glitter Paint by Number Craft sets. A great paint by number canvas with added glitter for a bit of sparkle. This is a perfect starter painting set for kids who want to develop their painting skills, or just love a nice craft set. Painting is. great way to improve concentration, fine motor skills and encourage creativity and self expression.
I remember having magic colour changing pens as a kids, so I am loving the look of Marvin’s Amazing Magic Pens. These are great for changing the colours of your drawings, making 3D lettering and writing secret messages. Plus you can use your eraser pen to magically erase the colours completely, great for cleaning up mistakes or sharpening up details. Hours of creative fun to be had.
Card Games and Board Games for Everyone
We discovered this awesome new word building game whilst at Blog On Kids this year. I was lucky enough to have a great chat with the designer of Shenanigrams and Elian had a go playing it and he picked it up really quickly. I think its a brilliant way to help kids learn how to spell and build words, plus they can steal words, which makes it great fun. Unlike Scrabble they don’t need to be able to see the whole word in one go so it evens the odds between adults and kids. You have letter tiles and tagging markers, each player takes a turn to place one letter tile, building a grid of words, you finish a word and tag it…but players can add a tile or change a tile to steal the word. first player to use all their markers wins! Its fast paced and lots of fun!
A new version of Exit The Game but this time for the kids! Jungle of Riddles is the newest in the Exit game line up. A re-playable game as each time you will get a different set of puzzles and clues to solve, to help you open the treasure chest. Play on your own or in a team to work out the tricky riddles and win the game. Perfect for introducing kids to logic games, suitable for ages 5 and up.
Zingo the fun word matching bingo game for ages 4+. This is a game Effie has been enjoying since we saw it at Blog On Kids this year. Like a traditional bingo game but with matching word tiles instead of numbers. Great for learning word recognition and basic spelling skills.
The Kingdomino game range is expanding, now you can pick up the new Dragomino game for kids. Become a dragon trainer and uncover the most dragon eggs to win the game. A simple strategy based game that is easy to learn and perfect from ages 5 and up. Build your kingdom by matching landscape pieces and uncover the hidden dragon eggs to grow your team. A game with hidden maths skill that the kids will love.
Ginger Fox have a whole host of brilliant card and board games for both adults and kids. These are perfect for family games night or as extra little gifts for Christmas time, lots will fit into stockings if you’re short of ideas for older ones too.
Yes, Yes Yeti is a family family friendly card game of strategy and luck. You’ve found the yeti but now you must race to be the first player to reach him. Will you play it safe with low number steps or do you take a risk for a high number but risk making a slip and ending up at the back.
Don’t be a Dik Dik is the adult card game where you don’t want to be left holding the Dik Dik. A fast paced card game which is great for breaking the ice or adding some laughs to an adults night. Pass your cards, make pairs of naught named animals and plants but just don’t be left holding the Dik Dik at the end. A game similar to Go Fish and Old Maid but with hilarious card names.
Also from Ginger Fox Games are these TV based card games. Catch Phrase is just like the TV show, just say what you see on the cards, work out the well known phrase to win the points for your team. This 60 card set is a perfect travel game for when your away with family or to take to friends houses over the Christmas period.
Or Maybe Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win is more up your street. Just like the TV show first your team answers quick fire questions to build their life points. Then in stage 2 the team must work together to answer general knowledge questions each which have a corresponding point score. Build your bank, cash out, but don’t go over the correct answer or you will lose it all. Fun for ages 8+ and a brilliant game for the festive season.
The Christmas Express Game is the festive board game that all the family can enjoy. The aim of the game is to be the first player to travel from your Home Station to the North Pole Station. But you’ll have to avoid the Hustle Bustle, the Reindeer Crossings, the Snow Storms and maybe the naughty elf, and keep an eye out for Santa’s sleigh as he could help you on your way. The perfect game for Christmas Eve or Boxing Day.
Spot The Intro Game is one for all the music fans. With over 1200 tracks ranging across 6 decades this is one for all the family. Race against the clock to name famous songs and singers before the other team. Songs are loaded straight from the game cards onto your phone and uses your favourite music streaming service. Plus you’ll get bonus trivia questions along the way to add an extra fun element to your game play.
Another naughty game just for the adults. This is Poetry for Neanderthals the ‘Not Safe For Work’ Edition (so its extra naughty!) A funny word game where you need to describe your naughty word or phrase to your team mates for them to guess, the catch is your only allowed to use single syllable words! But if you slip up you get whacked with an inflatable spank stick! The team to guess the most correct answers and have the highest score at the end wins. With over 400 phrases its hours of hilarious game play.
Christmas always seems to be the time to pull out the board games and enjoy some silly fun, or competitive time as a family. The #Upsidedown Challenge Game is one that all the family can get involved with. Once you pop on the special goggles which turn your world upside down, its crazy how difficult a simple task can be, and how much mess you will make completing activities like pouring water or drawing an easy picture.
Cheatwell Games Tension Junior is a fun naming game for all the family. Based on the top-selling Tension board game, this version will suit the younger members of the family whilst still being fun for grown ups. The unique Tension score slider makes marking down the shout-outs so easy. Would you be able to name 10 Spotty Animals or 10 Things that are Pink before the timer runs out
Another board game that all the family can enjoy is Eye Spy with My Little Eye Game. This fast and fun game is all about being the quickest to find the pictures that start with the chosen letter and popping your coloured counter on it. Great for expanding your kids vocabulary and helping them learn. Perfect for both adults and kids to enjoy together.
This or That Game is a quick and fun 50/50 card game where you need to chose between 2 answers in 200 weird and unique questions! Would you know the answer ‘Which weighed more – A Velociraptor or a Turkey?’ or ‘Which is there more of – Species of animals in the rainforest or Hotdogs eaten on the 4th of July in America?’
