Parenting // Home Hazards: Clearing The Minefield For Children

Of all the locations in the universe, we want to hope and pray that our home is where we are safest. It’s a place where we are at our most vulnerable. It’s a place where we cherish our most intimate moments with our loved ones. For young children, however, it’s a place for adventure. We tall beings also are known as adults, can look upon every room and access every part of it with just taking a few steps. Our kids take at least 3 to 4 times the amount of steps we do. They’re small and in that mode of exploration. This means we have to think of every possibility and not doubt their ability to get into the nook and crannies. Look around your home right now, and try to point out what potential hazards there could be that may harm your kids?

Innocent uneven

With our large stomping feet, we clobber around the room with booming footsteps. At least this is what it feels like when you’re about 3ft tall. So we can use our weight and height to gloss over imperfections in our homes as they cannot. Uneven floor surfaces are a potential rude awakening to this. If you have hardwood flooring or some kind of flooring with panel fittings, make sure the surface is smooth. A panel that sticks out a little can be stubbed by a child’s feet and cause them to trip over. This could mean breaking out the first aid kit as the first thing to hit the floor will be their face.

The bleep boops

Wiring is fascinating to children. The different colors, all swirling around each other and sometimes there are little LED lights on the electric chipboards that control everything. You can already see the danger here. Fitting none fire rated access panels to parts of the home where the underneath is exposed could save your child’s life. Fitting smoothly into the walls, whatever is behind the panel such as wiring, heating pipes, gas meters mains electrical units will be hidden from their eyes. It’s also very tough to open the panel, to begin with because you can have a lock installed on each specific panel. It’s a metal door, so it’s robust to any bumps and smashes.

Safety strap

Think back to when you were a kid, what was the best time of the day for you? For many grown ups looking back to their childhood, it was when their favorite television show came on. A cartoon, animation or some kind of funny puppet show was a time of pure joy and laughter. Sometimes you got too excited and wanted to jump around and mimic the movement of the characters. Although TVs aren’t as heavy and bulky as before, they’re still weighty for a small frame. Just for a little peace of mind, fit a safety strap to the back the television and attach it to the wall behind. That way your expensive widescreen won’t fall and break if your kids get a little unruly and they won’t hurt themselves either.

It’s a great time to be alive when you’re young. Not a care in the world and you regularly get lost in your own imagination and exploration. As parents, we certainly don’t want curiosity to hurt our children to clear the minefield in the home for them.
