I can well and truly say the cold weather is rapidly moving in to Wales. It is getting quite nippy in the mornings and evening, so I am needing to layer up for things like the school run. But knowing how to layer clothing in the best way can be tricky. You don’t want to be too cold when you’re out and about. But you also don’t want to be sweating and hot the minute you’re inside or the sun finally comes up.
After the success of the summer dresses I received from Yours Clothing, I jumped at the chance to work with Yours again. This time they wanted to collaborate on an autumn/winter clothing post. I am becoming quite the fan of Yours Clothing, and have purchased a number of items myself since my first collab. They stock clothing from sizes 14-40. And their designs are specifically meant for curves, so fit and flatter mid and plus size ladies.
Just FYI I ordered the dress and cardigan in a size 16 and the jacket in an 18 (so I can fit layers under it!), and I am 5ft 9in so you can get a general idea of the lengths!
The clothing was gifted by Yours in exchange for this review, but all opinions are my own
How to Layer Clothing for Autumn
The thing about the autumn is that it will often be cold in the mornings when you leave home, but the day will warm up lots and you’ll end up too warm if you’ve dressed purely for the cold morning. This is why layering your clothing is so important in autumn. It gives you the option to remove items to adjust to the change in temperature, whether you’re going to work, the school run or running daily errands.
Choosing a good base outfit
When you’re thinking about how to layer clothing for a great autumn outfit you need to start with a good base layer. This is the main part of your outfit. And most likely the part you will spend the majority of your day in, as you will shed your warmer layers throughout the day or as soon as you get to your place of work. You want your main outfit to lightweight and not too thick.
I love this Dobby Pleat Skirt Midi Dress from Yours Clothing and it is the perfect outfit. Easy to dress down for day wear, smart enough for work but it can be dressed up for evening wear.
Add a good quality knit
Next you’re going to want a nice knit layer, a cardigan or jumper. I always try and find a good quality knit that will be versatile and match lot of outfits. It will become a go to item in your wardrobe throughout the colder months.
To layer with my dress I chose this Black Varsity Stripes Knitted Cardigan from Yours Clothing…and oh my gosh it is literal perfection (ok…not perfection as it needs pockets!! Yours Clothing listen up, lol). This chunky knit Cardigan is so versatile and I have been wearing it almost every day on the school run. I can throw it over pretty much any outfit, from a winter dress to jean and a t-shirt, and it helps to keep me warm.
Finish off with a warm jacket
Lastly you need a nice warm coat. If you’re only going to be dashing in and out you might not need a heavier waterproof. A warm coat with a hood may be a better option. But if you’re going to be walking a longer distance, a waterproof might be a safer option.
For me I need a jacket for the school run, getting into toddler classes and general mum errands! I chose this gorgeous forest green coloured faux fur trimmed duffle coat from Yours Clothing as an every day coat when the weather isn’t too wet. Its lovely and warm, has a hood if its a little bit wet, and I just love the colour of it!
And don’t forget some sensible winter shoes
Throughout the winter I tend to opt for my trusty Doc Marten boots but any good quality winter boot will do the job. If you live in an area prone to snow and ice then look for something with suitable grippy soles. But make sure they are comfy enough that you can wear them all day. Especially if you’re going to be in work or out and about all day.
Extra tip: If its particularly nippy then add a scarf
