Needing some inspiration? Designing a children’s bedroom certainly isn’t a walk in the park. The space needs to balance practicality with fun and excitement, which is easier said than done. Your little ones are probably demanding what they want from their new bedroom, but, fortunately, you’ve got the final say!
Here are some tips to help you in the design process.
Make best use of the space
No matter how big the room is, maximising the usable space is so important. A child’s bedroom is a place for sleep, play and plenty of other activities. As such, space-saving (or space-maximising) hacks should be at the forefront of your plans.
Loft beds help to free up precious floor space with the sleeping area raised off the ground. Underneath, you can add a little desk, reading or play area. Awkward spaces in a bedroom can be troubling during the design phase. However, there are always solutions such as fitted wardrobes for eaves and other annoyingly impractical spaces.
Keep it simple
Don’t overcomplicate a child’s bedroom, it will surely resemble something far different from your plans after a few days anyway! Simplicity will help to make it easier to clean and tidy, which should be a priority on your list as a parent.
Less is often more, and in a kid’s bedroom, a blanker canvas should help them to put their own spin on things as they grow up. Soft furnishings and decorations can add character and colour without needing to go too crazy with the fundamentals.
Have some fun with it
The design process should be a chance for you to have fun creating a wonderful space for your little ones. They’ll play in the room once it’s completed, but you can play around with themes and layouts in the design stage.
Adding in some surprises, such as transformative lighting, can make the process all the more worth it. Just imagine their little faces when they find out all the hidden surprises in their new bedroom!
Provide ample storage
Storage is key in any bedroom, perhaps even more so for a child’s. Clothes may not be the main concern, but staying on top of the hoards of toys and games that are undoubtedly going to accumulate should be a primary goal.
Choose a dedicated place for toys, such as under-bed storage or baskets in the wardrobe. Hanging shelves or storage pockets are great to keep floor space clear. You can never have enough storage!
