Just before Christmas Jon and I were invited to spend the night at Peterstone Court, a local Grade II listed Manor House Hotel, located in the Brecon Beacons. We had a lovely relaxed night and a rather amazing 3 course meal. So we thought we would share some pictures and our thoughts with you.
It’s not often Jon and I get to have a night alone, without the toddler and the dog! And it’s even less likely we get to spend a romantic night in a posh hotel. So when the people at Peterstone Court invited us to spend the night at their hotel and enjoy a delicious 3 course meal, I simply asked how soon we could come!!
We are very lucky to live in South Wales, so close to some amazing historic properties and truly stunning scenery. When your young all you think about is exploring the world away from your home, but as we have gotten a little older we have started wanting to discover the gems that are literally right on our doorstep, which is why we love to find beautiful hotels and restaurants like this, just an hour away from our home. Hopefully 2019 will be full of more trips and posts like this one.
The Hotel
We are so lucky to have visited during the festive season because the Christmas decorations were so unbelievably beautiful. The hotel is stunning anyway, decorated in a typical Manor House style, but the Christmas lights and all the festive touches just made the place come alive.
We spent a little while before dinner having drinks in the library, lounging in comfortable arm chairs, by a roaring fire and flicking through magazines, its was so relaxing and very much needed. It was lovely to have a little quiet time, away from social media and the constant attachment we all feel to our phones (OK I posted a few insta stories and Jon took these shots with the camera, but we didn’t do any scrolling or checking on our accounts!)
The Room
The hotel has 12 beautifully decorated, elegant and grand rooms. All of which boast beautiful views over the Brecon countryside. We stayed in one of their deluxe rooms which was very decadent. A huge luxury bed, with super soft bedding and big fluffy pillows which were so comfy! We had a lovely relaxing night and actually managed to have a night of uninterrupted sleep (with out a toddler! It’s a luxury).
The Food
I apologise in advance for the rubbish quality photos, they do not do the food justice! The dining room was very romantic and dimly lit, which was a lovely atmosphere but very hard for taking decent photos!! And Jon ate his starter before I even had the chance to take a photo of it.
The restaurant serves locally sourced modern British cuisine all prepared in-house by the Chef owners. You can see the full current evening menu here if you want to check out all the dishes the restaurant has to offer. You don’t have to be a guest to eat there either. They are open to the public for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
I found it really tough to decide what to have as there were lots of items on the menu which took my fancy.
So what did we enjoy:
Starters:
I enjoyed Mac and Cheese with wild mushroom & three cheese sauce, crunchy shallot, bacon bits and it was delicious! I was a little worried about having pasta as a starter incase it was too heavy but the portion size was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed it
Jon opted for the Pressed ham hock terrine with house piccalilli and sourdough. This is the kind of dish he would often chose in restaurants as he loves pate and terrines, he is very much a meat eater. He really enjoyed the terrine and loved the piccalilli, which he had never eaten before!
Mains:
I eventually opted for the lamb with roasted winter vegetables, fondant potato and port sauce, which was so beautifully cooked! My lamb was so tender it was falling apart. My only criticism is I would have liked a little more of the port sauce, maybe a little gravy boat to add extra should you want it.
Jon chose the Venison Pie with Garlic Mash which he said was amazing. The meat in the pie was succulent and soft and the pastry flaky and buttery. He really enjoyed it all and we both had empty plates.
Dessert:
I’m actually not much of a dessert eater usually, I’m funny about cream and ice-cream and hot and cold food together, so desserts have never really been my thing. But as we were treating ourselves for the night I figured I should at least try something. I opted for the apple and plum crumble (minus the homemade vanilla custard) and it was honestly lovely and a great way to end the meal. The fruit was all so rich and soft topped with the nice crunchy crumble.
Jon on the other hand is very much a dessert person! He decided on the sticky Date pudding with butterscotch sauce and salted caramel ice cream and polished it off pretty sharpish. The pudding wasn’t too heavy or rich and the ice cream was creamy.
Peterstone Court also has an onsite spa should you want to take your relaxation to the next level. With treatment rooms, Jacuzzi, sauna, heated pool, gymnasium and relaxation room you are sure to be able to let your hair down and relax.
