Summer has just about come to an end. The cold weather is setting in, and all across the country, boilers are about to leap into action, and clocks are about to be set back.
This time of year tends to be associated more with wooly jumpers and homely pies than it does anything else. But if you’re willing to travel, you can extend the summer, and enjoy a lovely beach holiday even while the weather is cold back at home.
Hvar, Croatia
The Croatian island of Hvar is arguably the most appealing part of the country when it comes to beaches. The waters of the Adriatic are balmy, even beyond September, and there are a number of beautiful locations to check out on the rest of the island, too. Picturesque little villages, hidden coves, and other treasures are waiting to be discovered.
Paphos, Cyprus
On the southwest coast of Cyprus, we find the city of Paphos, and its abundance of gorgeous castles and archeological sites. Of course, there are plenty of amazing beaches to discover here, too – and, since you’re traveling outside of the peak season, you’ll find them much emptier and more laid-back.
Renting a villa on the island will typically allow you the best combination of affordability and features. You can get around via taxi, and visit all of the notable locations in your vicinity before retiring to the pool in the evening.
Madeira, Portugal
Madeira isn’t like any other European destination, as it’s actually a Portuguese territory in the middle of the Atlantic. The island offers a subtropical climate and plenty of greenery, as well as copious opportunities to check out the local, exotic wildlife. Find a reputable dolphin-spotting experience and head out into the water to see these amazing animals in their natural surroundings – and head up to the very top of the island to see the sun rise over the Atlantic.
Sardinia, Italy
The waters around Sardinia tend to be immaculate, and warm even during autumn. Thus, they’re a great match for snorkeling expeditions and other water-based activities. There are coves to explore, like the famous Cala Luna, which is bordered on both sides by sheer rock faces. During autumn, you’ll find it quieter and more peaceful.
Canary Islands, Spain
Like Madeira, the Canary Islands sit some way from mainland Europe, in the Atlantic. The appeal of these islands tends to stem from a different kind of tourism, however, with family activities, swimming pools, and nightlife tending more toward fun and excitement than relaxation. That isn’t to say, however, that Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria aren’t beautiful places with plenty of activities on offer. They’re blistering hot during the summer, but wonderfully mild during autumn and winter, too.
