Going shopping for clothes is like second nature for women. Why? Because we love the way it feels to try on clothes. There is no better feeling than trying on that perfect dress, seeing how it complements your figure, and imagining how you are going to feel when you walk into a room with all eyes on you.
However, those feelings are going to be dashed if you end up taking a dress home only to realize that it doesn’t fit as you thought it would. Even with a return policy in place, it can be daunting having to repeat the process of finding the best fitting dresses. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you pick the right dresses every time.
Dress According to Your Body Shape
This is one indispensable rule when buying women’s dresses. Every body shape is unique and beautiful but there are specific outfits that look great on certain body types. A-line or empire cut dresses flatter the Apple body shape most. While body-hugging dresses are great, they may not have the same fitting on an Apple shape except there it cinches the waist in. Hourglass figure, on the other hand, looks great in almost every outfit except when loose clothes are paired together.
If you don’t know your body shape, take a measuring tape and measure your shoulders, hips, bust, and waist. Stand straight when taking the measurements and ensure that the tap is not too tight or loose.
Pick Colors that Work
It is always a good idea to pay attention to the color of the dresses you wish to buy. You probably already have some favorite colors or those that flatter your tone the most- those are the colors you should pay attention to.
Stick to warm colors if you have a tan or warm skin tone and cool colors for pale or cool skin tones. Where two or more colors are used to make a dress for women, the colors should be complementary to one another.
Pick one or two outfits with neutral colors. Neutral-toned outfits look great on any occasion and you can complement the outfit with different accessories. Neutral tops, trousers, and skirts can also form the foundation for your overall outfit.
Try it On
If you get a chance to see the dress at a store, try it on regardless of how tempting it is to walk away with the dress right away. Ignore the size tags and take them into the dressing room to see how it looks like on you. Move around with it a bit and try sitting down to see how well you can move with it.
However, when shopping online, you may have to rely on size tags. The best way to avoid getting the wrong size is to buy from a trusted brand and see how it fits a model that is about the same size and has the same shape as you do.
Ask for Help
Bring along a friend or two who can give you their honest opinion. Also, if you are looking for something specific, tell the store consultant about your needs. They can guide you to what suits you best and give their honest opinion regarding dresses you’ve tried on.
