Yes I am bringing you another magnetic toys review!! Whoop whoop! You can tell we really love magnetic toys in this house. Honestly Elian is obsessed and I have found they are the most played with and most versatile toys we own. We were sent this set by Geomag to review (alongside the Magicubes we have already reviewed) and so far Elian is loving them…I can already see additional sets being added to his christmas wishlist. And I don’t mind at all if I’m honest, I love that he has a passion for certain toys and they are played with on a daily basis, then it makes the cost of them worthwhile! Plus I am a big fan of encouraging play with STEM category toys like these.
Read below to find out all about this set, what other sets are available (ie. what Elian already has his eyes on!) and what the benefits of STEM magnetic toys are for kids
The magnetic toys were gifted by Geomag for review purposes but all words, photos and opinions are my own
What is included in the Geomag Supercolour Magnetic Construction Set?
We were sent the 32 piece Geomag Supercolour Magnetic Set, but there is also a 52 piece and 78 piece set in this particular range. Included in this set are:
- 12 magnetic balls
- 12 magnetic rods
- 7 triangle plates
- 2 square plates
- 1 pentagonal plate
- Travel box
- instruction booklet with building ideas
The pieces are a mix of red, yellow, orange, green and blue colours. And are made from 100% recycled plastic which I think is great, that little bit better for the environment!
The travel box is perfect for packing them all away tidy and keeping them safe, as well as being great for taking them on the go with you
The instruction booklet has been great for giving Elian ideas and prompts on how to connect them to make different shapes. As he gets older he will be able to use his own imagination to work out how to build with them, but for now this was a great starting point for him.
What age are Geomag Magnetic toys suitable for?
These type of magnetic toys, with the balls and rods, are suitable for children (and adults) over the age of 5. Due to the small balls we have to make sure Elian only plays with them away from Effie at the moment, as it would be dangerous for her to swallow one of the balls. But Elian is old enough to know that he shouldn’t put them in his mouth (or up his nose!! as little ones seem so keen to do with small objects!)
Geomag toys are so versatile though that they will be suitable for anyone over the age of 5. My nephew is 11 and has enjoyed the challenge of constructing with them with Elian. And even Jon has enjoyed attempting different structures with them. If you had a bigger set then there is more challenging and intricate structures you can build which is great for older children. I think this is a toy that can really grow with your children and is perfect for expanding the set as they age.
I really like the look of the Geomag Mechanic sets for when he is a little older! They really building on structural engineering and mechanical engineering skills to make moving structures but in the for of making games and challenges, so I think they would really appeal to kids
What we think of our new Geomag Magnetic Toys
Honestly Elian really enjoys playing with these. He has been using them to practice his 2D shapes and challenging himself to use all the pieces to build a structure. They are great STEM toys as you really have to think about the engineering and how the items will connect to build a shape.
I think if you wanted to have more versatility with these type of magnetic toys though you would need a bigger set as the 32 piece is quite limited in what you can build. But it is a great add on set if you already have some of the bigger sets. This is also the first time Elian has tried the ball and rod type of magnetic toys, he usually plays with magnetic tiles or blocks.
These are a little more fiddly in comparison to his other magnetic toys. But presented more of a challenge to him. These really held his attention while he tried to construct a few different structures and shapes.
I can definitely see us adding another set to these so he can build larger structures like he does with his magnetic tiles.
What can you do with Geomag Magnetic Toys?
Honestly the possibilities are endless! Obviously it depends on the size of the set you have and what shapes/pieces are included. But when Elian is usually building with his magnetic toys he is all about building garages for his cars, transformer robots, space ships, HQ’s (for paw patrol or PJ masks), jails for the baddies (captured by PJ Masks usually lol!) or pens and zoo layouts for his wooden animals. He usually uses them alongside a lot of his other toys. That is why they are so versatile as a toy.
BENEFITS OF PLAY WITH GEOMAG MAGNETIC TOYS
Although toys are meant to be fun, it is also great when they are educational. Or when they help with kids development. These toys are STEM based so are intended to be educational and work on kids science and mathematical skills, without them really realising they are learning.
Here are some of the main benefits of STEM based toys
- Hand eye coordination
- Spatial awareness
- Improves fine motor skills
- Understanding shapes and structures. Physically being able to touch and feel a shape, its sides and corners helps them understand better
- Logical thinking and strategy. How to connect the pieces to make structures
- Increases attention span
- Problem solving
- Early maths and language development
