Today I am handing the blog over to Sam from Coco Butter Blog. Sam is a stereotypical girly girl who loves clothes, shoes, bags and make-up, plus she has an adorable pooch called Alfie (I think we would get on in the real world!) As the summer is coming most of us will be taking a holiday, so Sam is going to talk all about her top 5 tips for packing light.
Over to Sam…
Yay – it’s holiday time! However, I’ve noticed that airlines and holiday companies are getting more and more stingy with their luggage allowances. Where once you used to always get a 20kg allowance when you booked a package holiday, all companies are cutting their costs and so now it’s usually 15kg that comes as standard. That makes things kind of difficult for fashionistas as we usually need a lot of clothes to make sure we look fabulous every day, so here are my top suitcase-space-saving tips…
1. Outfit building – Everyone loves to have a lot of clothes to choose from but when space and weight is a bit of an issue – less is more! Before you go on holiday, put together which outfits you’re going to wear for each day and don’t bring other choices. This will also help with your getting ready time, as there’ll be no changing from one thing to another before deciding on what you’re going to wear.
2. Go minimal with make-up – Be realistic about what make-up you need to take with you. Do you have 20 lipsticks but always end up using the same one? If so, then just bring that one! Only bring what you will definitely use and don’t forget that, as it’s so warm during the day, you won’t need a full face of make-up. You don’t want to be THAT person sat around the pool with falsies on. A tan will also give your skin a glow so opt for a tinted moisturiser or BB cream rather than a heavy foundation.
3. Mix and match – Pack smart with your outfits and pick things that are likely to go with a lot of other things. Whites, blacks and neutrals are all good colours for matching or, instead, go for lots of all in one pieces like summer dresses and patterned jumpsuits.
4. Leave the heels at home – I wear heels all the time – for work, for dinner, for cocktails – and so it’s amazing to just wear flip flops and sandals on holiday. Chunky wedges are a summer favourite but are heavy so, if you can bear to, leave them at home and go for Havaianas instead.
5. Be brutal – It’s easy to pack everything except the kitchen sink but try to be really honest with yourself about what you need. Yes, you might love your Converse but will you really need them for a beach holiday? This will definitely help you to put your packing into perspective and to only bring with you what you need.
Thanks Sam! These are some great tips and I stand by the Outfit Building tip all the way. We spent 1 month in China and packing was a nightmare, trying to get everything in our luggage to cover multiple climates was really hard, but these tips would have come in useful!
Do you have any great tips you could share?
Converse are actually one of those truly versatile shoes. They’re okay for walking around (better than most sandals and definitely better than heels) and they can be worn with skirts, dresses, or shorts and pants. Even on a beach vacation, you do some walking around!!
I’d add as an additional tip: remember that most bottoms (shorts, pants, skirts) can be worn multiple times without washing. So. Less pants, more shirts. And SmartWool socks are pretty good at keeping the stink away and fast-drying, so they’re suuuuuper handy for travel, too. I’ve got a post up with images of what I pack for 3 week trips, here: http://byov.blogspot.com/2011/03/lightweight-packing-for-3-week-trips.html, and it’s the same list I use for packing for 11 day trips as well 🙂
Great post! Good packing just takes planning really!
