Tension Travel Edition Review: A Brilliant Compact Game For Holidays And Family Trips

May 20, 2026 Chantele Leave a comment

If you enjoy quiz-style games that get everyone thinking quickly, Tension Travel Edition is such a fun one to pack for holidays, weekends away or even long train journeys.

We already own the junior version of the Tension board game at home, which both Elian and Effie really enjoy, so we were excited to try the travel edition too. Straight away though, it was obvious that this version is definitely aimed at older children, teenagers and adults rather than younger players.

That said, it still turned into a really fun family game once we adapted how we played it.

You can find the travel version here on Amazon UK

Tension Travel Edition Review

What Is Tension Travel Edition?

Tension Travel Edition is a compact version of the classic Tension game designed to be portable enough for holidays and travel.

The aim sounds simple at first. Players are given a topic card featuring ten possible answers and must try to name as many correct answers as possible before the timer runs out.

The challenge comes from trying to think quickly under pressure. Some answers feel obvious while others completely disappear from your brain the moment the timer starts ticking.

It’s one of those games where everyone ends up shouting suggestions over each other and laughing at the random answers people come out with in a panic.

How To Play Tension Travel Edition

Gameplay is really straightforward, which makes it easy to pull out during a holiday or family evening without spending ages reading instructions.

Each card contains a topic with ten possible answers hidden underneath. Players or teams then race against the timer to guess as many of those answers as they can.

Topics can range from general knowledge and food to geography, entertainment and everyday categories, so every round feels different.

Because the game comes in a compact travel-sized format, it’s easy to throw into a suitcase, backpack or even keep in the car for trips away.

Is Tension Travel Edition Suitable For Children?

This was probably the biggest thing we noticed while playing.

Effie found most of the cards a little too difficult, simply because a lot of the answers rely on wider vocabulary, general knowledge or life experience. She still enjoyed joining in, but definitely needed help with many of the topics.

Elian, on the other hand, actually really enjoyed the challenge on some of the cards. At 9, he could answer parts of certain categories confidently and loved trying to beat the timer, although there were still some topics clearly aimed at older players.

After the first few rounds, we ended up playing as teams instead, with Jon and Elian against me and Effie. Honestly I think that’s the best way to enjoy it with younger children involved.

Playing in teams takes the pressure off and turns it into more of a collaborative game where everyone can contribute ideas. It also makes younger children feel included even if they can’t answer every category independently.

If your children already enjoy quiz games or word games, older tweens and teenagers would probably get much more out of this version.

Why It’s Great For Travel

One of the best things about Tension Travel Edition is how portable it is.

Some travel games can feel a bit limited or repetitive, but this still feels like a “proper” family game despite the smaller size. It doesn’t take up much room at all, making it ideal for:

  • holidays abroad
  • caravan trips
  • airport waiting time
  • rainy evenings away
  • family hotel stays
  • adult-only weekends away

I actually think it would be especially good for holidays with teenagers. It’s quick-paced enough to hold their attention while still feeling challenging.

It would also work brilliantly for adult-only trips or evenings with friends at the pub. If you want something interactive that doesn’t require loads of setup it’s great.

A More Grown-Up Version Of A Family Favourite

Since we already own the junior version of Tension, it was interesting comparing the two.

The junior game is much more accessible for younger children and definitely works better for mixed ages. The travel edition feels far more knowledge-based and aimed toward older players who can think quickly across a wider range of subjects.

That doesn’t mean younger children can’t join in at all. But I’d say the 12+ age recommendation feels pretty accurate for independent play.

As a family team game though, we still had a really good laugh with it.

Would We Take It Away Again?

Absolutely.

Tension Travel Edition is the kind of game that’s easy to pack but still feels engaging enough to play repeatedly during a trip away.

For families with older children or teenagers especially, it’s a great option for evenings together without screens. And for adults, it’s one of those simple but surprisingly competitive games that quickly gets everyone involved.
