Eye-Fi Cards – The Bloggers Best Friend!

Chantele has been blogging for several years, and her blog like many others, revolved around great eye catching images. Sometimes at events she would use her phone instead of a camera so she could live tweet whats going on, or add pics to instagram or Facebook. Camera phones are getting better, smart cameras have started appearing but camera phone quality still sucks and smart cameras are just plain expensive. There is one solution that can bring your existing camera and social media together, and that is a little device called an eye-fi card.

I stumbled across this great little device when it was bought as a surprise gift by a friend of mine. In basic terms it’s an SD card that has a built in wifi antenna. It’s pretty easy to set up and you link it to your mobile device such as a smart phone or tablet. It takes a couple of seconds to transfer an image and it only has a short range but I simply leave my phone in my pocket and my photos transfer over one at a time without me having to think about it. You can snap a pic, get it on your phone, tweet it, Facebook it and carry on with whatever your doing in just a few seconds, making the most of your existing camera. Simple.

Personally I would advise buying the Eye-Fi brand cards or the SanDisc versions as I found them more reliable according to reviews online. The Pro version of the Eye-fi also transfers RAW files to your device or computer, but that would take considerably longer than a JPEG. There is no CF version available at the moment, however less cameras are using them these days and it’s reserved for the more Pro end of camera bodies. You can buy an SD to CF adapter which fits some bodies, but the metal cases block a lot of the signal so its not very effective anyway.

If you have any other camera or technology related questions you would like me to answer, please get in touch and maybe I can answer some more in a future post.

Well this is really rather clever, definitely something to consider if I have a big event coming up. x

What a clever little device!! they are quite pricey though, but I think they would definitely be worth the money.

They are pricy, but sometime you can pick one up cheaper on ebay! It is so useful though, especially if the photo conditions are difficult for a phone to really get a decent shot

Sounds okay, but not for me – I already have a DSLR camera and the camera on my phone is decent quality (Samsung Galaxy S5). I find that I invested my money wisely you’ll succeed, so I guess if this is what will help you, then you’ll be fine.

They are pricy but can be very useful if you want high quality images for your social networks whilst on the go, I use a Nikon D700 most of the time, and it is far superior to my phone, even though its an iPhone, if the lighting conditions are tricky. But if you won’t use it then obviously its not for you.

Ive used it at a few events now, as I can tweet better quality pics than the ones off my phone, which can be a bit rubbish if the lighting is difficult! I think you would really like it!
