A few people bought little dude plain white baby grows, as lovely as they are, they just aren’t really us! So they have been sitting in a drawer in his bedroom since we were given them, luckily they were size 3-6 so he hadn’t outgrown them yet. Finally I have decided to do something with them! Dylon got in touch a few weeks back to ask if I fancied some dye packs to have a play with and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to break out those white babygrows.
I received 4 packs of dye powder – Navy Blue, Bahama Blue, Forest Green and Tropical Green. So far I have tested out 2 colours, the Navy Blue and Tropical Green and I have saved the last 2 to test out next week. So here is how to ombre dye and my creations so far!
I really liked the idea of ombre dip dying the babygrows so pulled up YouTube and started looking for some simple tutorials. I found 2 different versions of how to ombre dye and tested both of them out.
This is the first technique where you add the powder a little at a time and dip the item a little less into the dye each time, so the dye is getting stronger the more powder you add. You keep dying less and less of the garment until you have used up all the powder. I think this technique gives a smoother gradient of colour, especially if you split the powder into as many parts as possible, think I managed to get 8 concentrations out of the pack! I wanted the colour to be more on the pastely/pale spectrum rather than bright so I only dipped each section for a minute or so, until I got to the last 2/3 which I let soak for a little longer to really absorb the stronger dye. I turned out really well and I think he looks really cute in it!
The second technique is to make up the whole packet then dip the garment into the dye first all the way to the top for just a quick few seconds (the navy dye is really dark so I did this super quick for the firs dye to have it as pale as possible so you’d be able to see the ombre better). Then you hold the next section of ombre in for a little longer so more of the dye is absorbed, you continue this till you get to the end of your garment. I only did 3 sections this time as the dye is so dark and pigmented. I also did this technique to a tiny white t-shirt and I have to say it is probably my fav piece of all as I adore how it turned out (thats it in the last picture)! When I test out the other 2 colours I may even go buy another white top or 2!
I also tried to do a stripped pattern on one of the sleep suits (you can see it in the green pictures) with the green dye but I couldn’t find any elastic bands. I thought tiny hair bobbles would work just as well but they weren’t quite tight enough in some places and absorbed some of the dye in places, but I think it still turned out pretty cool, will have to try again with some proper elastic bands next time!

I did the same thing with my white baby grows, we died em yellow, blue, free and purple. We did Tie dying so it looks really affective. I would love to try the Navy Blue dye though! Again I would Tie Dye a few white T shirts.

Dylon dyes are also brilliant for restoring the look on old towels too. I’ve revived many towels by re-dyeing them.

I’d like Bahama Blue to dye some of our white towels which are not really as white as they used to be. The turquoise should freshen then up nicely. Then I’d like some Navy Blue as I have always fancied trying out the Shibori technique(s) which I will use on a cream duvet cover & pillow cases I was given which are also rather boring.
