Usually Jon doesn’t let me decorate for Christmas until the 1st of December. Not because he’s a Bah Humbug, but he finds all the decorations to be a bit overwhelming. But this year I have been slowly adding Christmas touches to our home throughout November. He won’t notice a little Christmas candle here, a ceramic Christmas tree there…or the 3 foot nutcracker (haha!!).
Ok, so obviously he did notice them, but it’s made the transition to full out Christmas a little bit smoother this year. Rather than rushing to try decorate the whole house in just 1 weekend I have been slowly decorating over the course of the last few weeks. It’s been a lovely slow transformation, and a lot calmer. Now I only have the actual tree to put up, and my door wreath!
Decorating slowly this year has honestly made such a difference. It’s spread the cost, kept the stress low, and made the whole house feel like it’s gently shifting into Christmas rather than exploding into it overnight. If you’re someone who gets overwhelmed by the “one weekend decorate-a-thon”, try adding a few pieces each week – it’s been a game changer!
Here is how I have added festive touches and Christmas Decorations to each room in our home
Our Bedroom
Crazily I have never bought Jon and I christmas bedding before. The kids have had it but I’ve never really thought to get some for us! This year that changed with this stunning Catherine Lansfield Christmas Nutcracker Stripe Duvet Set, a contrasting throw and a fun matching pillow! And that pillow lights up!

Our Hallway
I have a stunning star burst mirror in our hall and usually I thread tinsel through it. I spotted this amazing Deer Swag Wall Decoration, which I knew would work so well in our hallway. It is so eye catching and different to anything I’ve seen before. It attached so easily with a few cable ties and has added the perfect festive feel to our hallway.

Our Dinning Room
We’ve had a new dining suite this year and now have a beautiful long table. I’m still after the perfect runner but have added a stunning large woodland themed glass lantern. It looks beautiful in the evenings with a candle inside.

Our Living Room
Well clearly every home needs a 3 foot light up nutcracker! I adore nutcrackers and already own a number of them. I’ve really wanted a large one for a long time, and this was the year to add one. He is made of metal, but isn’t too heavy, beautifully detailed and has a sturdy base to keep him standing. Plus what’s even better is you can pop open a hatch on his back to add batteries and all the little bulbs down his body light up! Truly a magical addition to our home!

At the back of our living room we have a vintage side board which I love to dress. This year we have added a light up christmas village scene, light up ceramic Christmas trees, another nutcracker and these adorable penguins.
Lastly I’ve added this lovely delicate snow globe to the shelves where we keep Ebbens memory box and photos. I always like to add something new to his shelf each christmas and I think he would have adored snow and snow globes as much as his mama does. So this is likely to be a permeant fixture on his shelf.

Why I now love gradually decorating for Christmas
I love that each room now has its own little festive moment, and it’s felt so much calmer decorating this way. Jon always says he’s a “1st of December only” person, but really it’s because he finds the sudden switch to full-on decorations a bit overwhelming. Adding things slowly has made it easier for all of us, and it’s actually become a much nicer way to ease into the season.
How about you—do you like to decorate bit by bit through November, or do you prefer to wait and do it all in one go? And what’s the very first decoration you put up each year?
