What is a smart casual outfit? It’s such a confusing term and people will always have different interpretations of what it means. So today we are going to break it down a little and layout a few guidelines. I’ll make it simple to put together the perfect smart casual outfit in no time.
These days dress codes and fashion rules don’t really exist in the same way they did 20 or 30 years ago. Fashion has come a long way and people are far more relaxed about what others choose to wear. But if your invited to an event, maybe a work’s do or a less formal wedding reception, you might be told that the dress code is for a ‘Smart Casual Outfit’. That in itself sounds like a contradiction of terms. But there are a few rules to follow that will stop you feeling underdressed and make choosing your outfit a little easier.
Smart Casual Explained
In the most basic sense smart casual means for women not wearing distressed jeans and a t-shirt but also not donning your sequinned party dress or evening gown. Or for men no joggers, jeans or t-shirts but also not over dressing in a full suit and tie combo.
It really is somewhere in between the causal outfit you might wear when your doing your food shop on the weekend and the smart outfit you might wear to a formal event or in some cases to work if you have to dress smart for your office.
Tips To Nail A Smart Casual Outfit Every Time
- Don’t wear any items which are ripped or distressed in any way, even if it is designer distressing
- Remember, shoes and accessories can change an entire look. A casual outfit can be transformed into something much smarter with the right smart shoes and classy jewellery, including elegant earrings for women, and maybe a blazer or short leather jacket
- You don’t have to spend a lot of a smart casual look but investing in a few quality key pieces, like well tailored black trousers, can upgrade your outfit and wardrobe instantly.
- Don’t forget your grooming. We don’t want the hard work of a great outfit being undone by messy hair or badly chipped nail varnish. Also don’t over do it, keep it simple and sleek
- Keep your outfit sleek and simple without bold clashing fabrics or anything too in your face
- Jeans aren’t a complete no go, but go for darker colours and well fitted. Not skinny fit or anything too baggy either.
If In Doubt Go Smarter!
In my experience, if in doubt it is always better to overdress slightly, rather than underdress. Feeling underdressed will affect your confidence and self esteem, whereas dressing smarter can boost your confidence as you feel great.
The Perfect Smart Casual Outfit for Every Occasion
My go to smart casual outfit is the simplest one of all. Most women will probably have the items in the wardrobe already. Pair a simple fitted blouse, like the ones found on Chums, with dark tailored trousers, smart low heeled shoes and a classic gold or silver necklace.
If you want something a bit bolder simply add a bright pair of shoes and a matching statement necklace. Perfect for a party but still on the smart side to keep you looking classy.
