You may well recognise his colourful little village, or be forgiven for thinking it looks like something out of a movie as Portmeirion has been used as a setting for many a film and TV series over the years. It was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village, and is now owned by a charitable trust.
Many of the buildings have been painted in bright colours, and the central focus of the village is a beautiful sunken gardens with a classical Italian fountain. Hay-on-wye
Probably best know as the home of the literary festival, Hay-on-Wye is a town situated just inside the Wales England boarder with great historical roots going back to the 11oos. Being boarded on one side by the the River Wye and another against the Brecon Beacons it is a place of outstanding beauty.
If your a literature fan this really is the place for you. The town is full of book shops and little hidden libraries. Plus there is an abundance of great cafes and eateries you could while away a few hours with a tasty treat and a good book.
Even if books aren’t your thing the town offers brilliant small shops, historical ruins to explore, outdoor adventures on the wye river or hiking in the black mountains. You’ll find a whole host of things to enjoy on this blog post.
Radnor House is a great B&B option if your looking for accommodation. a Grade ii listed Georgian town house in the heart of Hay-on-Wye.
Llandeilo
Llandeilo is a small town in the county of Carmarthenshire. It has an abundance of brightly painted houses that line the Main Street, yet it is surrounded by stunning views over the river and set against a countryside backdrop. It really is a truly beautiful village.
Llandeilo may be tiny, but it packs a punch on the shopping front. The whole of the highstreet is packed with independent shops stocking beautiful wares. If you’ve got kids then you need to check out Eve’s Toy Shop, they stock a stunning selection of kids toys all hand selected by the owners. And if you have a sweet tooth then Heavenly is a must!!
I can highly recommend staying at The Cawdor if you decide to visit Llandeilo for a weekend. You can find booking info here I promise you won’t be disappointed and their food is amazing! Speaking from experience!!

If your there over a weekend you should visit the Farmers Market. Jam packed with local fresh produce and home made items your sure to find a little treat or 2 to take back to your hotel room or home with you.

Relax in one of their beautifully decorated rooms or enjoy a delicious meal in their bar or restaurant area. Their chefs are passionate about local produce so expect a rustic welsh feast!
St Davids
It’s the smallest city in Britain (population of just 1600 in the 2011 census) and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries due to its impressive 12th Century Cathedral (which is built on the land of an even older religious building). Situated within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery renowned for its beauty and abundance of wildlife. It really is a truly beautiful location for a mini break.
Just on the outskirts of St Davids you’ll find the impressive Twr Y Felin Hotel, within walking distance to St Davids Cathedral. This old windmill was given a new lease of life when it was reimagined as a contemporary art hotel. It is jam packed with all manner of stunning modern art works all commissioned to reflect the Pembrokeshire landscape but in a new way.
