The first fun job – Giant Chalkboard!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Chalk Board Paint

Today would usually be the day for our monthly catch up, but seeing as we have only just started posting again since the move there isn’t really a lot to catch up on, so we will just crack on with the new house updates, and todays is something a bit fun! A giant chalkboard!

When I first suggested to Jon we paint an entire wall with chalkboard paint (thanks for the inspiration Apartment Therapy) he wasn’t exactly keen on the idea. We had the perfect space right by the front door, where it wouldn’t be seen from the living room, even with the open plan style of the house, and it would be right be the door for reminders before we leave (there was logic in my madness!) I wanted to paint the entire section, floor to ceiling with black chalkboard paint, but Jon thought it a may be a bit heavy, so we compromised on a section of the wall instead – but still a pretty big section!

So here is a quick guide on how we did it

  1. Get yourself a tin of chalkboard paint or blackboard paint – we went with traditional black but you can often find it in other colours too now. Ours was from the Range, but you can pick it up in most DIY stores or online, they are usually around £5 a pot, which is enough to do a section like ours or even a little bigger.
  2. Masking tape off the section you want to paint, be careful to keep the edge clean and without creases as the paint may seep underneath any raised sections.
  3. Get painting! We used a roller for the large sections and a thin brush for the edges and corners, just to be sure. We gave it two coats to make sure the colour was even, and the paint would withstand being written on.
  4. When its dry remove the masking tape gently and you should (fingers crossed) be left with an awesome chalk board wall!
  5. Now it’s just up to you to leave yourself or your other half/kids some messages and reminders, which you can simply wipe off with a damp cloth at the end of the day.

Chalk Board PaintHere is our finished Giant Chalkboard, we decided to carry on the paint into the side walls of the alcove to make it fit in better and give it a slightly different aspect, and everyone who has seen it so far loves it! It’s not completely finished yet though as I am planning to add a B&W polka dot wash tape trim to the top and bottom, and possibly add a bit of home made bunting to the top of the wall, plus possibly a little shelf to store a pot of chalk in one corner. But you can at least see the board and how it looks!

What do you think? Would you add a chalkboard wall to your home?

Looks even better now as it has a polka dot deco tape trim top and bottom!

It looks great! I really really want a chalkboard but I think the kids would take it over. We’re looking for for a new house at the moment, fingers crossed I can then persuade the Mr 😉 x

I LOVE it! It’s such a great idea to have it by the door, so you can check you have everything you need before heading out. #UKbloggers

Love it!! What an impact it has, I can not think of anything I would enjoy more than writing lists on a wall – I love lists 🙂

I love it. I’m not sure I’d convince Hubby B but I’m sure going to give it a go. I have a little pot of chalkboard paint that I’ve used for little projects but this is hardcore! Thanks for linking up to #MakingHome! X
