Our Family Trip to Iceland
A few months ago, we ticked off a huge family bucket list trip – Iceland in the snow! Jon has visited Iceland a number of times now as he runs Iceland tour company Siren Adventure Tours, but we really wanted a chance to share this epic country (which we both love) with the kids. It was a magical experience for all of us, but especially for the kids, who had never seen proper snow before. (Elian really wanted to see lots of snow and Effie was desperate to see the Northern Lights! They both got what they wanted, thankfully!) Every moment was filled with excitement, from crunching through fresh snow to marvelling at frozen waterfalls, and of course getting to see the Aurora.
While we didn’t do any skiing, we did lots of walking and exploring – including some very wet and windy adventures behind waterfalls. That meant having the right clothing and the perfect kids winter jacket was absolutely essential. Luckily, we were kindly sent some ski and snow gear from Muddy Puddles to test out. Here’s our full kids waterproof ski gear review, based on real-world use in chilly (-2 to 3 degrees for the week we visited), snowy Iceland.
We received the items from Muddy Puddles for review purposes but all words, photos and opinions are our own
Fit and Comfort – Kids Winter Jacket and Salopettes
Effie wore the Blizzard Ski Jacket in Pink along with the matching salopettes, while Elian had the Blizzard Ski Jacket in Green. Both jackets were true to size and fit perfectly with space for cosy layers underneath, which is a must when out and about in such cold temperatures.
The kids winter jackets are fleece-lined with a snug inner collar, and the salopettes are padded but flexible – no stiff materials or restricted movement. Both kids had no trouble climbing snowy mounds or navigating the rocky paths that were required to reach a few of the locations. Plus they spent plenty of time chasing each other throwing snowballs.
Despite the high level of insulation, nothing felt bulky or heavy – the kids had full freedom to run, roll and play in the snow without complaint.
Warmth & Waterproofing – Put to the Test
The weather in Iceland certainly put the kids winter jackets to the test. We went from snow fall in -2 degrees, to getting soaked with glacier water spray whilst standing behind a waterfall, but the gear held up brilliantly.
With a 10,000mm waterproof rating and taped seams, both jackets and salopettes repelled snow and water with ease. The waterproof outer layers dried incredibly fast once we got back to our cabin – a huge plus when you’re heading out again that evening or the next morning.
On one occasion the water droplets from the waterfall froze solid on Effies hood just minutes after walking away from the falls, which both kids thought was really cool. They also thought the fact that my hair froze solid at the tips where it had gotten damp was hilarious!
Practical Features – Designed for Real Life
We were genuinely impressed by how well thought out these pieces are. Both kids winter jackets include features like adjustable cuffs, snow skirts, reflective detailing and secure waterproof zips. Elian especially liked the big pockets – perfect for snacks, stashing their hats and gloves when not in use and a few little lava rocks he collected when we visited the lava field!
Effie’s salopettes have reinforced knees and ankles, which were ideal for all her snow-diving antics. Plus zippers at the ankles to make it easier to put on and take off her snow boots. The adjustable braces meant we could tweak the fit as needed, especially as she is still quite dinky. But the braces can also be taken off with a handy zipper to make the trousers totally versatile.
Snow Boots – Warm Feet, Happy Kids
Both children also wore Muddy Puddles snow boots, which turned out to be absolute winners. With removable faux-fur lining, sturdy waterproof outer material (made from vegan suede) and durable grippy rubber soles and toe caps, they tackled ice and snow with no problems.
The kids feet stayed warm and dry on even the coldest days walking in snow or while in the freezing glacier waters which both kids had no issues about walking in. The boots were comfortable enough for long walks on rocky rough terrain. No blisters, no soggy socks, and – most importantly – no complaints!
Having the removable lining means we could easily take them out to wash or dry should they get soggy or damp (Elian waded across Skogafoss following Jon to get to the central island for photos, and the water was well above his boots, lol!) and they dried off really quickly when back in our cabin thankfully!
Due to the elastic bungee cord type of fastening both kids were able to easily take their boots on and off on their own, and it was simple to adjust and tighten them over their thicker thermal socks.

Final Thoughts on Muddy Puddles Ski Gear
If you’re heading somewhere snowy this winter – whether it’s for skiing, snowball fights, or just good old outdoor adventures – we can wholeheartedly recommend Muddy Puddles. Their kids’ winter jackets, salopettes and snow boots kept our little explorers warm, dry, and ready for anything Iceland threw at us.
This is more than just a kids waterproof ski gear review – it’s a thumbs-up from two snow-loving adventurers who truly put their winter wear to the test.
