The Importance of Heirlooms

Cross-Jones Photography ring photosWorking in the wedding trade means I get to see a lot of wedding bling! Glorious diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and everything in between! A wedding and engagement ring is so important and personal to the bride and groom, whether you spend a lot or a little on it, it is still the external symbol of your marriage to the rest of the world.

Getting that beautiful ring shoot is so important to us as it is something that is so symbolic of a wedding and a marriage. It isn’t just a piece of jewellery, the endless circle symbolises eternity and never-ending love. Above are a few of our favourites we have photographed over the past year (see more of our work on our website Cross-Jones Photography)

For me my engagement ring is just that little more special (that’s it above!), as it’s a family heirloom. I inherited the engagement ring when my grandmother died and always knew I wanted it to be my engagement ring too when I eventually got engaged. It’s over 60 years old and it means so much to me knowing my grandmother wore it and even more knowing that my grandfather chose it for her all those years ago. I hope I will get the chance to pass it down to someone else in our family in years to come!

Family heirlooms are so important, whether its a piece of jewellery, furniture, a dinner service or anything else, they have not only sentimental importance but quite often have a significant financial value.

Obviously having family heirlooms also means you need to take care of them so you are able to hand them down to the next generation. The worst thing that could happen to your heirloom would be to loose or damage it. That is why it is so important to have your heirlooms covered under your household insurance (or special insurance if it has a high value). I lost a diamond from my ring 3 years ago and luckily we had added it as a separate item under our insurance so the cost of replacing it was covered.

Working out how much and what to cover under your household insurance can be really hard, between electrical, furniture, appliances, jewellery, clothing and everything else we keep in our home the value can rack up quickly. Legal & General have created a great Home Insurance Contents Calculator to help you work out exactly how much your home contents is worth and how much cover you need.

Do you have any family heirlooms, or do you have things you hope to pass down to your children or grandchildren.
